Mission, objectives and history of the Working Party

Mission

The Working Party on Mixing brings together academics and industrialists from all over Europe to make advances in the science and engineering of mixing in the process industries.

Mixing applications extend to a wide range of industries, including fine chemicals, agrichemicals, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, biotechnology, polymer processing, cosmetics and consumer products, food, water treatment, pulp and paper, and minerals processing. These involve diverse mixing operations including:

  • Single phase mixing, from turbulent to laminar flow
  • Dispersions and multiphase mixing
  • Mixing of products high viscosity and complex rheology
  • Mixing in reactive flows
  • Heat transfer and mixing

Depending on the application, diverse types of mixing technology are used, such as batch, and semi-batch tanks, continuous flow mixers (e.g. inline mixers, static mixers), as well novel equipment types, including those used for process intensification.

OBJECTIVES

  • To provide a place/framework for academics and industrialists to exchange ideas and identify topics and challenges that are important for the development of new and improved industrial mixing processes.
  • To promote collaboration between both academics and industry in order to tackle the challenges identified and to develop new techniques and tools that will lead to improved and/or novel mixing processes.
  • To ensure an exchange of ideas and scientific knowledge with other EFCE working parties to more effectively improve specific mixing applications.
  • To maintain an active and well-knit international community in the field of mixing
    • via the organization of the European Conference on Mixing every three years,
    • by ensuring a liaison with the North American Mixing Forum and national working parties.

HISTORY

Special sessions devoted to mixing in national, as well as international conferences on chemical engineering have existed since the 1950s. Later, recurrent demands in mixing research and development in the chemical and food industries gave rise to specialized mixing conferences in the 1970s.

During the 1st European Conference on Mixing, which was held in Cambridge UK in 1974, experts from several European countries decided to set up a Preparatory Committee for a Working Party on Mixing within the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. This Committee met at the occasion of the 2nd European Conference on Mixing in the Chemical and Allied Industry held in Mons, Belgium, in 1977 and decided to set up the Working Party.

The establishment of the Working Party on Mixing was approved by the General Assembly of the EFCE in 1977. The inaugural meeting took place in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on the occasion of the 6th International CHISA Congress in 1978. Until 1986, when the first chairman was appointed, the Secretariat of the WPM was run on an honorary basis by the Czechoslovak Society of Chemical Engineering.
