A/Prof. Kenneth Williams is motivated in the translation of research and innovation to industry through implementation of advanced systems technology and training of associated personnel. A/Prof Williams has been driving, facilitating and encouraging these endeavours with his team for over the past decade. In this time, he has built a research team and research area from small beginnings from the dynamics of aerated flows within pneumatic conveying systems and translated and broadened his research into dynamic moisture migration retention, handleability of wet and sticky material and recently improving materials handling challenges associated with  biomass feedstock. To initially achieve this expansion, he has grown the number of Higher Research Degree students that study in the materials handling group from 2 students in 2004 to an average of 15 students over the past 5 years. As part of this leadership, A/Prof Williams facilitates student collaborations, industry site visits and annual presentations.
More recently, A/Prof Williams has established a broader postdoctoral capability with the employment of 5 Research Associates over the past 4 years, who are actively involved in all facets of the research and management requirements of the materials handling group. He has also established productive cross disciplinary links with researchers from the geotechnical group, chemical engineering work in technical marketing of coal and iron ore and self-heating assessment, environmental interfaces with the Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (GCER) and the International Centre for Balanced Land Use and also importantly advanced control technology for bulk material handling systems with the University’s mechatronics group. A/Prof Williams also leads the international collaborative endeavours with Germany, China, Brazil, Turkey and the USA, in materials handling. This collaboration, combined with his external university and research institute collaboration shows the expanded vision that A/Prof Williams has have for international research and innovation collaboration.
