Dr. Elena Simone

is the winner of the EFCE Excellence Award in Crystallization 2017

 
Her PhD thesis titled

Application of process analytical technology (PAT) tools for the better understanding and control of the crystallization of polymorphic and impure systems

completed at the Loughborough University, United Kingdom, under the supervision of Professor Zoltan K. Nagy was recognized and appreciated by the international jury as the best thesis in terms of breadth and depth, scientific impact and the industrial relevance, innovation potential and the dissemination value.

Dr. Elena Simone obtained her Bachelor and Master degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, and her PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Loughborough University, UK.  She currently holds the position of lecturer in Remote Sensing at the University of Leeds, School of Food Science and Nutrition, Leeds, UK.

The award will be presented on 5 September 2017 at the 20th International Symposium on Industrial Crystallization (ISIC-20)  in Dublin, Ireland.

Dr. Thomas Vetter

is the winner of the EFCE Excellence Award in Crystallization 2014

 
His PhD thesis titled

Optimizing the Crystallization of Pharmaceutical
Compounds Using Additives

completed at ETH Zurich, Switzerland under the supervision of Professor Marco Mazzotti was selected by an international jury as the best thesis in terms of breadth and depth, the scientific impact and the industrial relevance, the innovation potential and the dissemination value.

Dr. Thomas Vetter obtained his Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He currently holds the position of postdoctoral research associate at Eli Lilly and Company (Indianapolis, IN, USA) and at UC Santa Barbara in Prof. Michael F. Doherty’s research group (Santa Barbara CA, USA).

The award was presented on 18 September 2014 at the 19th International Symposium on Industrial Crystallization (ISIC-19)  in Toulouse, France.

Dr. Levente L. Simon

is the winner of the EFCE Excellence Award in Crystallization 2011


His research papers on

"Endoscopy based in-situ bulk video imaging of batch crystallization processes" and
"Bulk video imaging based multivariate image analysis, process control chart and acoustic signal assisted nucleation detection"

achieved the best evaluation results in terms of breadth and depth, originality of the topic studied and of the methodology employed, innovation and industrial relevance, dissemination of results, and scientific impact of the work.

Dr. Levente Simon received his diploma in Chemical Engineering from the Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and his Master's degree in Chemical Engineering Technology from the University of Twente, The Netherlands. In 2007 he completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering at ETH Zurich, Switzerland in collaboration with Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Between 2007-2011 he worked as senior chemical engineer researcher at ETH Zurich establishing the PAT assisted separations technologies sub-group in Professor K. Hungerbühler's group with focus on crystallization process analysis. In 2010 he won the "Crystal Growth Detection System" innovation challenge on the InnoCentive® platform.
Dr. Simon recently joined BASF Schweizerhalle AG where he works as Separations Technology Specialist. More information about his former research activities at ETH can be found here: http://www.sust-chem.ethz.ch/research/groups/separation_technologies 

The award was presented on 15 September 2011 on the occasion of the 18th International Symposium on Industrial Crystallization (ISIC-18), held in Zurich, Switzerland, on 13-16 September 2011.

Dr. Pedro Miguel da Silva Martins

is the winner of the EFCE Excellence Award in Crystallization 2008


His PhD Thesis on

"Modelling Crystal Growth from Pure and Impure Solutions - A Case Study on Sucrose "

completed at the University of Porto under the supervision of Professor Fernando Alberto Rocha, was selected by an international jury as the best thesis in terms of innovativeness, breadth and depth of research, and its industrial relevance.

Pedro Miguel da Silva Martins received his Master degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto, Portugal. Currently, he works as a post-doc grantee of the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology at the Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular, Porto, on the  research project "Protein crystallization for pharmaceutical, biochemical and biomedical purposes". 

The award was presented on the occasion of the 17th International Symposium on Industrial Crystallization- ISIC-17, held in Maastricht, The Netherlands, from 14 to 17 September 2008.
